Gifting For Data Professionals

Title: Gifting for Data Professionals illustrated with a neural net image, a T-Rex, and other dinosaur climbing on the neural net.

So You Love A Data Professional

Loving a technical person brings about some lovely pros to the relationship, whether it’s a platonic friendship, familial, or something a little more romantic. Data professionals bring a special tenacity and deep logical breakdown to all things. They also tend to bring quirk and my personal favorite, deep-cut, dryish, and nerdy humor.

It’s hard to buy gifts for anyone, but for the data nerd in your life, it could be even more difficult. Much like most careers, there are many detailed and nuanced facets to the field, leaving generic data gifts falling short on the desired outcome of hilarity and letting your loved ones know they’re seen and appreciated in the deepest of ways, much like their obscure, difficult-to-follow, hilarious jokes.

The shortfall of good, funny, data gifts out there become apparent for me any time I tried buying something for a colleague, manager, or holiday party. I kept thinking: data people are funny… so why aren’t there more funny things out there for them??

Introducing “Inside Data Jokes”, my sarcastic, funny data joke line for all those in the field. There are subtle nods to data visualizations (ahem, Tableau’s blue and orange color schemes, donut charts, hatred for pie charts, ahem), coding jokes in feminine designs for those ladies out there crushing their T-SQL and R, and puns.

These are an accumulation of years data’ing. I started out with a spite-project developing a data store in a Microsoft Access database (spite because I was told I’d break things, so I had to prove that friend entirely wrong!). From there I found myself picking up random languages here and there, knowing just enough for me to finish a project and move onto the next project learning the next thing. I found the proclivity for learning programming languages to be fascinating, extrapolating logic from one to another, and hacking my way through a Data Science career turned Consultant turned Tableau (a Salesforce company) Solution Engineer.

I am forever grateful for my years in data where I was able to freely establish a solid sense of humor, staring at code, reading through some of the most asinine Stack Overflow posts, piecing together intricate automated workflows that teeter on a fine-tuned balance of server power and network bandwidth, and doing things like emailing VP’s stats that are so egregiously wrong they too should be embarrassed for believing them. We all have our data-baggage and we all must learn to laugh, learn, and commiserate over beers at the local dive.

Ah, the nostalgia.

If you’re at a loss for what to get your data engineering, data analyst, business intelligence developer, data scientist friend, colleague, family, or lover, this is the place to be. If you don’t know what your data loved one does, shoot me a note with a link to their LinkedIn. I might be able to help! If you overhear their work calls and hear things like “sequel” or “Tableau” or “PowerBI”, then you’ve #nailedit and are in the right place. If you don’t understand why they keep saying “Arrrrr” or why they’re constantly referring to “pythons” being in the office, still in the right place. Any doubts, reach out.
